Holiday Beverage Makeovers

Ho ho whole latte calories in your beverages!

During the holiday season, and throughout the New Year, keep a close watch on what you're drinking. Liquid refreshments can be very high in calories, and our bodies don't easily become satiated by them. You can drink 1000 calories and still feel hungry.

A 5 ounce glass of wine has about 120 calories; beer and light beer about 150 and 100 calories per 12 ounce serving. Hard liquor has about 100 calories per 1-1/2 ounce shot glass. Specialty drinks such as cream liqueurs can be much higher.

And while we usually think of plain black coffee as a non-caloric treat, specialty coffee drinks are often a whopping 500 calories or more!

At a holiday party or family gathering, start off drinking diet soda, or plain water or club soda with a splash of fruit juice. Next, enjoy a caloric beverage of your choice, but then return to the non-caloric options.

When going out for coffee, skip the specialty drinks altogether, or at least consider ordering them non-fat and without the whipped cream. You might also order a smaller size, and walk to the coffee shop instead of driving.

Enjoy an occasional White Chocolate Frappuccino Blended Creme Grande with Whipped Cream (over 600 calories) this holiday season. Just be mindful -- calories always count, whether you eat them or drink them.
