It's almost time for the next challenge, everyone!

Here are the guidelines for the New Year weight loss challenge (similar to those of the previous ones):

  1. The challenge will run from Friday Jaunary 1st through Sunday February 28th

  2. You may join the challenge at any time beginning Jaunary 1st, and late-comers are most welcome. You can even join the challenge in February.

  3. To join the challenge, post your height, starting weight and goal weight.

You may choose any goal you like. But if your goal is to lose more than 17 pounds during the challenge period -- more than two pounds a week -- please explain why you think your goal is realistic.

This website is dedicate to healthy, common sense, lasting weight loss, and does not support crash diets which do not have realistic expectations of producing long-term results.

For more information, please see the Tutorial and the forum topic The Most Likely Reason Your Diet Will Fail.

Your height will be used to display your BMI. Disclosing your height is optional but as incentive to share your height with us, unless told your height I'll just assume you are 5' (1.52m).

  4. Pick a day for your weekly weigh-in, and stick to it a closely as you can. Then post your current weight each week -- or as often as you would like!

You may wish to read:  How Often Should You Weigh Yourself

Those who are not losing weight, and those who are gaining, will receive praise for continuing to participate. It's so easy to run and hide! We've all been there ourselves.

We also know that by participating, they are very likely doing better than they otherwise would be.

  5. The results will be updated every Sunday (or more often) and posted right here just below these instructions, so they will always be easy to find.

We want the challenge stats to be realistic and reflect active challenge members, so anyone not posting for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the list. But they will be put right back on the next week should they post again.

If you need to withdraw from the challenge, please have the courtesy to post a farewell note or send me a Private Message (PM). Your name will be removed.

  6. You are encouraged to share how you are doing during the challenge, and especially to give each other support. However, to make it easier for me to find your weekly weight, please make sure your weight stands out.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them or send me a PM.

Wishing you success and happiness!

Nir

Hi Nir

Please count me in. It a really good time to start new year's resolutions and all that. It's also my birthday New Year's Day so a good incentive for me to get my weight under control for my big 50 in 2011.

I'll weigh in on the 2nd after all my birthday celebrations are out of the way!

Thanks Nir.

Goal 199.9999

Realistically, I should probably go for about 206, but that is too darn close to 200 to not go for it.

SW 52.48 (115.6lb) CW 52.72 (116.1lb). I don't think I'm lying about my calorie intake at the moment, one possibility is that I'm exercising less (certainly there were at least 4 rest days in the very recent past - bank holidays and more outings with company), another possibility relates to increased weight of food (averaging 4 kilos most recently), in any event will scale calories back from 2150 to 2100 until I see some stability.

Thanks, Tour. I guess you should get some of the credit. I went into my workouts with the mindset of having the "strength of Thor".

Unfortunately, the New Year didn't start out the way last year ended. I ended up working until 3AM on Friday morning, 5AM on Saturday morning, and about 6:30AM on Sunday. My routine was totally screwed up and I ended up gaining a bit but managed to get it back down this morning to 222.2. I'm a bit upset, but given the circumstances it could have been worse.

Wow, that is great! I'm flattered something I said actually helped someone. My 'Thor' attitude for myself has waned, however my determination to lose the weight by eating right and use the weights has not. I just don't seem to have the incredible eagerness to really kill-it at the gym like I had a month or two ago. Good news...I am still going. I made plans for myself to be at 180 by Valentines Day some 6 months ago. I still think I can do it! I just have to be very calorie restrictive and make sure I'm not getting any weaker on the weights. The 'Thor' icon is a great motivator, and I'm going to try to put him back into my mindset. You may laugh, but I even purchased a collectible figure mini-bust of Thor back then to keep my mind focussed. I suppose I need to put him in the kitchen where I can see him!

Tour and Tonus, I think it is great you have a "hero" that helps you through. I can totally relate. When I am dragging my butt or whining about what I can't have I invoke the spirit of my grandmother ( the strongest woman in the world ) and she always gets me through....sometimes she assists, sometimes she tells me to suck it up and deal with it, but whe is always there when I need her.  I think having heros is a great motivator whether they are real people or fictional...if we percieve them as strong that is all we need.

To the power of Thor (and gram )!!

Well it's weigh in day

current weight 129.2, up 2.1

That officially puts me in the pink...I'm not worried. I know what I did (ate like a :pig:) and now I need to fix it. I am back on track as of yesterday and I hope by next week I can at least get back to purple although it may take a couple of weeks. Amazing how much damage I can do in 3 or 4 days.

Hey guys, I need some Thor in my life right now!!! And how about that Grama who will push me to get my butt back on track???? lol......I know I need to get my butt in gear, but I tell you guys i am so whipped, the last two weeks having the family here, the drama with my sick family member, the sick doggie for two weeks with kidney troubles, etcetc....I am so far off the road I cant seem to find a path back! I can see the yellow brick road thru the trees, but i cant seem to get back to it! HELP!

I am down a pd again today, but I am still far from my starting wt for this challenge. I need to be rid of the headache, the lack of sleep, and renew my energy and feel good vibes!!!! I have the house to myself today, I am relaxing to my best, trying to get some sleep since the house is supposedly quiet, but yet, i havent slept at all? So much I need to be doing, how do i say ok, recoup, rest and get back on your feet?

I really envy and respect you guys for staying focused and getting yourself back onto the boat, now, if i can just catch a floating device too! LOL...

Good Job everyone! :)

BJ, we ARE your floating device, stay ere with us and you will get through this trying time. . Don't get down on yourself, you've done great. Maybe over the holiday you slipped a little, most of us did (notice I am in the pink) but that is behind us and we are going forward. It is hard to get started again but you can do it. The Thor/gram thing really is true, think of someone you admire for being strong and before you reach for that cookie or before you quite half way through your exercise think of what they would do and imagine them right there with you. I swear it works, at least for me.

Hi Nir, et al...TC here and I'm in for this challenge (also, I'm still no longer in Afghanistan!).  For you new guys and as a reminder to you "old hats", I was deployed to Afghanistan last year and lost a ton of weight (50 lbs in 6 months).  It wasn't too hard to do when all you have is work, exercise, and sleep (oh yeah, and someone cooking all sorts of good meals for you).  Well, back to the land of reality, family obligations, an open bar and an hour long commute and I gained most of what I lost back.

However, a year later, I've got my act together and will use this forum once again to get down to the 170s.  I don't have a starting weight yet, as I will begin my weigh-ins on Sunday, but I wanted to join in now so I'm committed to it!

Take care everyone and I'll be back to post starting weight and goals on Sunday!

Cheers!  TC

There is a huge team of scientists and mathematicians that crunch all the data for this website. They work tirelessly around the clock with no sleep and little food. They call themselves the 'Nir'. I'm sure they will have the info updated shortly.

That was funny, tourproven/Derek! it's actually true about the sleep, but as far as food goes, it is currently averaging 4 kilos (8-9lb) of food every day so hardly "little".

As I promised above "The results will be updated every Sunday (or more often)" and in fact I've just updated the table again so if it still says "January 3rd" press the F5 key. It takes about 20 minutes so I don't do it every day.
