Hi!
So we did this in January, and I think it is time to try it again.
Using a pedometer, track how many steps you take it each day. They DO NOT HAVE to be "aerobic" as in steps taken during exercise...even those you take in the grocery store, at work, wherever, everything counts.
It would be great if you make some of those come from a good steady walk for exercise though, that is what I aim to do anyway.
1. Set your own goal of how many steps you want to take each day. (I think 10,000 is the recommended count for weight loss).
2. Each day post and let us know how many you did!
Simple as that. You can see it as challenging yourself to make and exceed your goal, or as trying to take as many steps as those who are participating in the challenge with you. This will start June 1 and last through the end of the month.
Um...what if every week I post everyone's actual steps versus their total, and then write it as a percentage?
Yes I will do that
Get walking!!

I'm going to do it! But first I need to go out and get a new pedometer. My old one started to scream. >.< Not sure why, but instead of showing numbers it shod dots and instead of talking it started to screech. ^^;;
This should be fun though!

Well, mine doesn't count about a third of my steps Oh well, that just means I'll have to work harder...

I'm in I definately want to start wearing my pedometer regularly to know how much I'm moving during the day. My pedometer "cheats" on me too - it doesn't count sometimes. But like you said, that'll just make me work harder! More steps are never a bad thing
Oh, and BTW my goal is to be at or over 10,000 steps every day

| Good idea. I'll go for a goal of 8000 steps for the first week, then I'll try to get up to 10,000 steps. My pedometer will "cheat" positive too-if I'm driving on a bumpy road it'll count steps. This happened to me one morning when I got to work after driving through a construction site-I had like 1000 steps and all I had done was walk to the car! Hmmm, maybe need a new pedometer.

Does this look okay to everyone? Since we have a small-ish number of people participating I thought we could do an informal listing like this instead of the chart used for the weight loss challenges, if that is okay with everyone?
But I will gladly accept any and all input.

Me to!! But I did the regular, exercise, housework, walk the dog (actually, run after the dog), so I'd say around 7k
Can I challege the group?
I use to be on ediet and we could do internal challenges. For example; I can challenge everyone to try to go for double their goal for that day, and you get an extra 500-1,000 steps on a day they don't do so well....

Absolutely butterflybabe. I'll add you to the list.
Vetsmom--feel free to challenge us. Except...I don't think there's any way I could walk 14,000 steps.
Also, vetsmom...could you explain your username? I used to know someone on another forum with a similar name, so just curious.

Ok, I have a slight problem. I just realized I will be gone to camp from June 18-20 and 22-27. When it comes to it, do you want me to just catch up on the stats when I get back, or do one of you want to volunteer to be in charge while I'm gone? I will have no access to a computer...

I'll give it a whirl! I've had my pedometer for a few days and I seem to average 5500 - 6000 steps a day. (includes exercise, walking around markets.) I'm aiming to go up 250 steps a week or 500 steps every 2 weeks until I get 10,000 steps!
I wear my pedometer all day (besides when I watch t.v., I shake my legs and it starts counting) and it's very accurate to what I see. I was wondering what everybodies pedometer looks like too. Maybe it'll get a few more people to step up for a new challenge.

I challenge everyone to do 500 more steps that their goal.... Comeplete this challenge by Friday, but only on one given day (Wed, Thur, or Friday). If you complete this challenge, you do not get those 500 steps on that day, but on a nother day, where you fall short. Just include it on the post on the day you fall short, that you'd like to apply you 500 steps you won and include this coin....

My username: vetsmom_rgv, I get that a lot. I am the mom of a beautiful 3 year old little girlie, named Yvette! We call her Vet, so that explains vetsmom. RGV is what the area I live in is called!
And were you asking me to take charge while you were away? If so.... I ACCEPT. :D

ps. Walking steps for Tuesday: 9,243 yeah!

OK clarinetgurl, thanks for the reminder. I don't have anything to post for Sunday because I went on a road trip, then on my way home stopped to replace my pedometer-which had gone thru the wash . But Monday I finished the day with 8032, Tuesday only 6340. I work at a desk job, so it's pretty challenging to get those steps in!

Vetsmom, if you would like to take control of the challenge while I am away, that would be great. I was offering the job up to anyone who would like to do it. :)
I would suggest you, when the time comes, just copy and paste my post into a post of your own.

Bekster: About your desk job..... have you heard of the treadmill desk? Look it up, and tell your company about it! It was reviewed on Good Morning America, it looks awesome! Another thing is, for lunch, have a hearty salad & then go for a 15 minute walk!
Good luck!
CG: Okay, I thought you were offering me the job, but okay! Seems pretty simple.... I can do simple, :P
Imaw89: Tips for when it's raining.... jog in place! I know it sounds silly, but totally effective. I got the mini trampoline when I was pg, because I would get tired fast, but with the "tramp" I kept my activity level up and could do it whenever! Or you could try just basic jumping jacks, or turn on the tv to FitTV, or Exercise TV on your PC.
Good luck everyone! Let's Walk!
CJR
PS. Don't forget the challenge, now through Friday, try to walk 500 extra steps and you can add them to any day in the rest of the challenge, just add the Red Coin to that day, to have them added to your total for that day!

I put it on just now and walked like 2 steps to the pc and it said i had gone 18. But I'll record what i have left for today. I started at 2:40. Til i take it off tonight. Then i'll put it on in the morn and go from there. My goal?? Whatever i get tomorrow. That will be my goal. Or something along those lines. This is gonna be fun.

Ok I got a pedometer but I think I may need to get a better one. We'll see.
I only got it at 2:30 pm today but I'll count how much I do today.
But when you are in the car driving, do yours count up if the road is bumpy?
I did a 5 minute drive on our somewhat bumpy roads and I had 98 steps for that time, uh oh.
I think that means I need a not so cheap one.
How good quality are yours? How much did you pay for them?

WTG BEKSTER!! You recieve the "RED COIN" So, if there's a day from now till the end of June..... you get 500 extra steps! Just be sure to let CG know by inserting the "RED COIN" on that day!
Butterflybabe: That's okay about the counting bumps in the road, driving actually burns calories, so I don't think it's much of a big deal. Mine does that too and mine cost like $30! It also doesn't cound little movements, like when I'm cooking dinner or something. No biggie, just step a little more. And atleast you got one too, I know a friend who actually counts her own steps!
Steps for Wed: 4,825 (I woke up late too!!)

Oh ok good that it isn't too big a deal. I may get a new and better one later, also one that is a bit smaller. This one is pretty noticable that I am wearing it because of the big bulge it causes. It was $12 though so I guess you get what you pay for. But for now it is fine. I am just happy that I have one.
Soon I am going to walk a dog for an hour. Every thursday I go to this couple's house and pick up their dog and take it on a long walk so that will be good for my stepcounter!

I paid like five dollars for mine. It doesn't seem to really notice bumps in the road, but I haven't driven on a REALLY bumpy road with it..

well the road i was on wasnt sooo bumpy. it is a bus route road, not a back alley road. I guess my pedometer is just really sensitive.
How big are yours? like how far do they stick out? I don't want to pay $50 for one, but I wouldn't mind a smaller, better one.
Also does anyone know if the Nike+ ipod things count your steps? I have one of those somewhere and it can tell distance so if it counts steps I might as well look for that and use that instead.

I honestly don't know about the Nike ipod thing. never seen one. BUT if you figure your stride (take a normal step and then measure heel to heel or toe to toe) then take 5,280 feet and divide by your stride (1.2 ft, 3 ft, whatever, I don't know what an average stride is) that should tell you about how many steps it takes for you to walk a miles. So you could at least get a rough estimate of steps.
Mine's pretty small. I don't really notice it making a sticking out place in my shirt or anything. But I would imagine more expensive would be bigger...cause they'd have more hardware and stuff? But I could be totally wrong. But anyway, I would just stick with cheap, but I like to save money :P

Oh ya, well the nike ipod thing wouldn't be good anyways because I'd have to have my ipod with me and on all day. Mine sticks out an inch. It is clear plastic and has a plastic cover and ya, oh well.
Even though I started only at 2:30pm, because of the dog walking I did, I went 6974 steps on Thursday
oh ya and I found out that it doesn't count up that much when driving. I drove for about 15 minutes and it only added 2 steps, so guess my road is just bumpy!Last edited on 6 June 2008 07:21 am by butterflybabe

Ok so wow... I walk A LOT at work. My total for Friday is 17405!
I guess it makes sense (and why I am so tired when I come home and don't want to go for a walk with my bf after his desk job day). I work outside all day on an 8 hour shift. I probably only sit down for an hour total in those 8 hours. But wow, that is a lot of steps!!
Now I have to work on getting above 8000 steps on my days off

THE BONUS CHALLENGE IS OVER!!
The people who went above and beyond 500 steps of their daily goal were:
BEKSTER
BUTTERFLYBABE
CLARINETGURL
VETSMOM_RGV
Here is the link to the red coin:
IMG]http://i28.tinypic.com/nv2maf.jpg[/IMG
just add the []'s before and after IMG

Now, let's say next Friday you stay home to pay your bills, so you don't have time and you only reach up to 6,000 when your goal is 6,500 steps, just reply with your total amount and then attatch the RED COIN and you will have reached your goal, because technically, you've already walked them! :D

OK, this is harder than I thought it would be. I only got in 4800 steps on Thursday, 8078 on Friday. When I was a nurse working at the bedside I used to walk my off-I've clocked 14,000 steps in an average day before- but nothing like butterflybabe! 17,405 Whew! Now I work at a desk and usually get in only about 3500 steps during my workday. My office mate will drag me out for a walk during lunch and hustle me around a couple of miles and leave me red faced and soaked with sweat! She's one of those tiny, petite, no nonsense types-who, in spite of the fact that I've got a good six inches on her, walks circles around me. Now that's a good friend!

Only 6982 steps for Saturday. You can tell it was a day off for me! Another day off tomorrow but I will definitely be walking more.
Also I think I will buy a new pedometer. I didn't wear it today when my bf and I went downtown for dinner and then walked around a bit. I was wearing tight clothes and it just sticks out too much that it is so noticable. It is fine when I wear a sweater over it, but out to dinner I was just wearing a dressy top so I didn't wear it
