It's almost time for the next challenge, everyone!

Here are the guidelines for the Holiday weight loss challenge (similar to those of the previous ones):
  1. The challenge will run from Monday November 1st through Friday December 31st

  2. You may join the challenge at any time beginning November 1st, and late-comers are most welcome. You can even join the challenge in December. To join the challenge, post your height, starting weight and goal weight.

You may choose any goal you like. But if your goal is to lose more than 18 pounds during the challenge period -- more than two pounds a week -- please explain why you think your goal is realistic.

This website is dedicate to healthy, common sense, lasting weight loss, and does not support crash diets which do not have realistic expectations of producing long-term results.

For more information, please see the Tutorial and the forum topic The Most Likely Reason Your Diet Will Fail.

Your height will be used to display your BMI. Disclosing your height is optional but as incentive to share your height with us, unless told your height I'll just assume you are 5' (1.52m).

  3. Pick a day for your weekly weigh-in, and stick to it a closely as you can. Then post your current weight each week -- or as often as you would like!

You may wish to read:  How Often Should You Weigh Yourself

  4. Those who are not losing weight, and those who are gaining, will receive praise
for continuing to participate. It's so easy to run and hide! We've all been there ourselves.

We also know that by participating, they are very likely doing better than they otherwise would be.

  5. The results will be updated every Friday (or more often) and posted right here just below these instructions, so they will always be easy to find.

We want the challenge stats to be realistic and reflect active challenge members, so anyone not posting for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the list. But they will be put right back on the next week should they post again.

If you need to withdraw from the challenge, please have the courtesy to post a farewell note or send me a Private Message (PM). Your name will be removed.

  6. You are encouraged to share how you are doing during the challenge, and especially to give each other support. However, to make it easier for me to find your weekly weight, please make sure your weight stands out.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them or send me a PM.

Wishing you success and happiness!

Nir

I'm going to be the first to join

SW 54.37kg (119.8lb)
GW 55.28kg (121.8lb)    goal to gain 2lb.
Height 1.65m (5'5")
I will weigh in on Fridays

Actually I've gained a masive 2.46kg (5.42lb) in the last 40 days so whilst a 2lb gain would be OK I am actually hoping for maintenance. This is also a period where I am hoping to learn whether an intake of 2,500 calories is compatible with this vague gain/maintain objective.

This graph shows where 2,500 calorie intake fits in with my eating over the last 14 months, it also demonstrates that my 'confidence' with eating high numbers is not always sustainable for long periods!

I'm in.  I lamed out of the last challenge because I gained.  So here I go again trying to get it all together and DROP pounds!

HEIGHT = 68 inches

START Weight = 170

GOAL Weight = 160

This challenge is 8 weeks long and my goal is to drop 10 pounds.  I have to get this off, I've been feeling really fat and I hate it.  I'm the only one who can do something about it.

Good luck everyone!

I am so in for this challenge. I have been so far off track it isn't even funny. I have really let myself slip into old habits and kept saying "tomorrow" I will deal with it "tomorrow" well tomorrow never came and I have really gained. I am in this until the end.

I'm back again :)

Height: 63"
Starting weight: 118.6lb
Goal weight: 112.0lb

Look how close that number is now  Did I ever really, honestly think I'd get there? Or even this close? It's only taken me three years... I think my final goal weight probably should be less than that, now I can see what my body is like this close. Oh well!

I'll weigh in on Friday's since that's the day the challenge ends on.

Nir, I finally got a chance to look at the Physics Diet site and like how they calculate weight loss.  It makes sense.  Thanks for posting the info.  I'm going to switch to using that method for determining my current weight.

Hi,

This is my first post on this board.  :)  I figured I might need a little help with my weight loss.  I so want to make sure to do it this time.  Not just for me but my daughter.

Height    63"

Weight  193.4 pounds

Goal      18 pounds (I so want to get under 170)

I will be weighing in on Monday mornings...my husband stole the scale from me.  I have started a blog where I am writing everything down.  Food & exercise journal and emotional "stuff".

Hope everyone does great.

Promising start, I think. I suppose I need to be ahead of the game what with Christmas falling a week before the end...

Hi, I'm in!
Height: 5' 2"
Starting weight: 170lbs
Goal weight: 154lbs
Weigh-in on fridays.

150lbs would be a great treat, as that would be my pre-pregnancy weight. I hit 203lbs while I was pregnant and have been 'stuck' at a stubborn 170lbs since about 3months post-delivery...I'm just coming up on a year post-delivery on Nov. 15th. My biggest hinderance is a lack of time. I'm a stay-at-home mom mon-friday during the day. I take night classes at a local college mon-thurs. And every other saturday/sunday I work two 12-hr shifts at the local public hospital. I have a baby jogger, but mostly I'm so tired I don't even want to get out of bed, let alone walk. (And yes, I know I'm tired because I'm not getting exercise in the first place which would boost my mood and stamina)... The first step is the hardest.
THANKS!!!!

Hey Maple Leaf.  Glad you made it.  :)  I have to admit since I have been walking...I feel fantastic.  I hardly ever want to nap anymore.  However, my life isn't as busy as yours right now.  WHich is okay for me...because I can really focus.

I'm weighing in on Monday - today's Monday and...

170

Same as last Monday, which I'm actually okay with today as the scale was creeping up a little throughout the week, then back down.  Those darned fluctuations....

My goal for the week is to see a loss from today's weigh in. At least 1 pound darnit!

That's down 5.2 pounds from last week. I know most of it is water but some of it's not and it sure feels good to see a downwards number after so many weeks of gaining. I feel a little more in control, the structure of following South Beach is helping me do that.

Starting Weight 193.4

Monday Weigh In Weight 187.8

Weight Loss for this week 5.6

I am so excited, though as someone else said it is probably mostly water weight.  However I had no McDonald's at all this week.  I did eat out at Subway 3 times though.

After weighing myself, I had Sheldon hide the scale again as I know i would stand on it 20 or 30 times by the end of the day.

My daughter is home sick from preschool today, so I am hoping I can get my walk in this afternoon with her.

Take care, and I hope to hear how everyone else is doing.

Hi Michele, yes South Beach is low carb. Lots of veggies but really not much else in the carb family. The first 2 weeks not even any fruit. After that there is some limited fruit and other carbs but always limited.

Hello! I am brand new and I am very excited about this challenge! I've been looking for something to help me stay on track during the Holiday season.  It's the hardest time time of the year for me with all the extra treats and lower activitiy due to the cold weather.   My goal will be to lose 14lbs my December 31st 2010. I feel it is a little bit of a high goal but I know if I push my-self I can reach it! Besides how great will it be to start the new year in at 138lbs! I haven't been there is years!

Height  63.5 inches

I'm starting today at 152.2

GOAL WEIGHT 138lbs

I will update every Monday AM and have about 7weeks in the challenge

Oops!  My roommate recalibrated our scale last night...and it was pretty far off.  My actual weight is 150 lbs instead of 158 lbs. :)  Knowing that, I'd love to change my goal to 138 lbs instead of 142 lbs.  For a total of 12 lbs to lose.  Sorry for the Goof.

Great job everyone.  I am a bit nervous an I had 3 bad days.  But am back on track today.  I even weighed myself (not supposed to but I accidentially found the hidden scale) the other day.  I had gained 2 pounds back.  So hopefully by Monday, I will be back down, or lost more.

Hey all, I'm new to the site.  I've already started weight loss on my own but came across this site and found this challenge and think it's a great idea to help keep me accountable.

Height: 65 inches

Current weight: 193 lbs

Goal weight: 180 lbs

I think I might lose a little more than that since I went from being completely sedentary to eating heathy and being active but I'll keep to this goal of 2lbs per week, everything else will be a plus :)

CW 157.9, down another 2.3 for the week.

I am very pleased with that but I can also feel myself slipping again so I need to be very careful. I must journal everything I eat, it's the only way for me...that and no refinded carbs.
