Well hey everyone,

my names Bev, im 21 years old, i'm 5 ft 9 and I weigh 281lb's (*cringes*). I finally decided I need to turn my life around and stop waiting for the right time to lose weight and just do it, the right time for being healthy and getting fit is always now and anyone who says otherwise is just deluding themselves (like i was!). To be honest I dont know how i managed to weigh so much, its not like i binge particularly, just a long steady process of bad food choices has brought me to where i am today.

I have just finished my second year of my law degree (the stress of this probably has contributed to my overeating!). I graduate next year (july 08)and I want to be down to my ideal weight (around 145lb according to the calculators on this site). so thats 136lb's to lose, a whole person! whilst this seems like a massive challenge hopefully it is one i will rise to! I've got 4 months off uni over the summer to start to make a really big indent into my weightloss and to hopefully get my body used to eating the right things, but im not going to get obsessive about it, i really want to lose weight the right way. I've already taken the first step and joined a gym and i'm planning to go to a couple of classes (aqua aerobics x3's a week and beginners spinning x1 time a week), i've also started rowing, using the exercise bikes and the elliptical trainer.

If anyone here has any hints or tips or just wants to say hi, feel free, losing 136lb's is a really daunting challenge when you're just starting out, and without a doubt most of you will know a lot more about this than me. By the way, i think this is a fantastic site, its taught me loads of stuff about weight loss that i had no idea about! e.g now i know every pound of fat is 3500 calories when i look at how many cals i burnt at the gym it will actually mean something!

Anyway... yesterday i started my healthy eating and fitness, so here is my food and exercise diary!

DAY 1

AllBran- 100 cals

grapes- 100 cals (ish)

salmon steam fresh meal- 300 cals

tin of fruit- 70

sweet and sour chicken (homemade) with rice and veg- 600

drinks tea, coffee etc- 100

Exercise

10km rowing- 500

general gym stuff (exercise bike, elliptical, stepper, runner) - 500

1 hour swimming -500(?)

Welcome, Bev

That does sound like a daunting goal........but it can be done!    I started at 247 lbs and got down to 156!   Just be faithful to your goal.........when I stray, and think I can allow myself little treats and cheats........well, that's when it's easy to keep on treating myself.   I find I do best when I journal my food.   Have been busy lately, haven't journaled, and am not making progress right now.

Don't give up!   You need to do this for yourself and your health!   I can't describe how much better I feel now, than I did at 247 lbs.   There is just no comparison!

Hiya Bev!

Just wanted to say I love your title---I did a power point over battle of the bulge, battel of berlin, and VE Day in history last semester.

My only suggestion is that you might want to eat a teensy bit more. You only ate 1270 calories yesterday, and you estimated that you burned around 1500.

You also burn calories just breathing, blinking, thinking, walking around your house, etc.

I used this site's RMR (resting metabolic rate) calculator. I found that your sedentary RMR (which is described as "Little or no exercise and desk job") is 2,525. That means that every day, if you basically just sit around and do nothing, you still burn that many calories by blinking, doing laundary, going to the restroom, etc.

Is a day like yesterday typical for you? You can use an activity multiplier to find out how many calories you burn. The activity levels used in Peter's calculator are:

lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk=RMR of 2893
moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk=RMR of 3261
very active (hard exercise or sports 6-7 days/wk=RMR of 3629
extremely active (hard daily exercise/sports and physical job=RMR of 3998

Whatever level you decide you are at, a good goal is usually to eat 15-20% less than that (I think that is right...someone correct me if not...it may be 20-25%)

I have been told that the most important number to look at is your unadjusted RMR (yours is 2104). If you eat below this number on a regualr basis, your body tends to think you are starving it, and it will start hoarding whatever food you give it. Your metabolism will fall, and you will actually start to gain weight.

You can look at all the numbers I posted here for yourself by going to the homepage and clicking on the BMR/RMR calculator.

So, I hope I didn't bombard you with too many numbers. Welcome to :cph:! Can't wait to read about your progress!

How do you know she's blinking?

Seriously though, the above guidelines are generally correct.

One point to note is that, however impatient you are, you shouldn't be eating less than 75% of your unadjusted RMR (that's 1578) without medical supervision, so I'd go up to that level immediately while you're deciding how much to eat!

Yay, I did something right:tongue:

How completely audacious of me to assume that she spends at least part of her day blinking. Next I will assume nothing:grin::tongue:

Haha, clarinetgurl, you are right to assume i am blinking! will take what you and peter said about calories on board and try and eat some more. felt like i had no energy when i got up today so you are probably right- i need to eat more! only thing is i dont know which level of activity i would be classed at as before i started this i did hardly any exerice and now im going to the gym twice a day, so i take it now i would be very active? so then i need 3629 just to breathe and blink! so 75% of that is 2721 calories! thats a lot more than i thought i would need. and to be honest eating healthily i'll find it really hard to get to 2000 let alone 2721... is that really right?

Hisgal- wow! you have done amazing! how on earth did you do it? you really are my inspiration right now, its nice to know that even though its such a daunting challenge to lose 136lb's that it can be done and when i get their i know ill be a lot happier and healthier because of it too.

Day 2

(this was yesterday, before i realised i wasn't eating enough calories)

corn flakes -170

salmon steam fresh meal -300

grapes- 100

pizza (with sweetcorn, peppers, mushrooms and ham) - 750

Exercise

100 lengths swimming- 500

45 mins aqua aerobics class - 400

I wouldn't want you to increase calories too quickly - do it gradually. build up to 2100 and check you're stable (not gaining) then gradually go up to 2300, 2450.

No need to panic if your weight flactuates dramatically at first (it is water weight)

It's not just down to calories. Most people respond best (in weight loss terms) when they monitor what they eat, too.

If you can keep your fat intake to 20% or so (that's in calories, not weight) and your protein at 30%(ish), then with some judicious exercise (including weights) you may see some good results.

At the risk of sounding like a cracked LP record, could I suggest that you don't monitor only your weight.  Use a skinfold calliper regularly to monitor your body fat. It's much more useful feedback, since you may encounter periods when your weight stalls, but your body fat still decreases.  That's important to know!

Good luck - we all have our fingers crossed for you.  (I forget how many calories that burns, but I bet Peter's got it somewhere in his exercise calculator!)

Peter and Nevd- thanks for your advice:smile:. I am steadily trying to increase my calories like you suggested, though i must admit i'm finding it difficult to eat more calories from healthy things. yesterday for example, i managed 1410 calories and i felt completely stuffed. its amazing how before i started healthy eating and exercise i ate really high calorie foods quite a lot of the time and even though i was consuming more calories i felt hungry a lot more than i do now!

I'm not just looking at my weight, as i know this can be misleading if i put on more water etc. The scales at my gym are really good (tanita ones i think) and they tell you your body fat percentage (mine is 52.1%) and the weight of your body fat (146lb ) so it will be these figures which really matter to me.

Day 3

special k- 110

jacket potato with tuna, extra light mayo and sweetcorn, with salad -550

Chicken, peppers, onions, mushrooms, sweetcorn, tomato and basil sauce and a little wholemeal pasta (oh, ok, and a sprinkle of cheese!) - 650 (?)

Pinapple Juice - 100

Exercise

10km rowing- 500

speaking of exercise, think i'm definately going to have to cut back on my twice a day gym sessions till i get a bit fitter. these last 2 mornings i have woke up absolutely achy! so will go once a day unless i really feel up to going to the gym again. afterall, there is no point me burning out on day 3!

20 mins elliptical trainer - 200

Just be aware that the body fat scales often give variable results according to your body's state of hydration.

Those cheapo skinfold callipers aren't similarly affected - hence my championing them all the time!

nevd- thanks for the useful information, its another thing i've learnt on this site! where abouts can you pick up these callipers from? im guessing local chemist would have them so ill check their first.

Day 5

today i decided i'd have a day off from the gym, i felt like my muscles could use a rest and saturdays are generally pretty frantic for me as me and my fiancee go over to visit my parents for the afternoon/evening and do our shopping.

today i must admit i didnt eat enough! it wasnt that i was deliberately trying to restrict my calories to an unhealthy level, its just that i made healthy choices and was genuinely full! but will definately be eating more cals tomorrow - for a start im going out for sunday lunch with my fiancés family.

cornflakes - 110

salmon steam fresh meal- 300

spagetti bolognese- 600

weight watchers light chocolate moose - 104

exercise

45 minute walk - 350

You'll be lucky. I got mine off eBay. It was approx £10.

If I had to guess places in my locality that have this, I might try the sports equipment area of a department store, or the muscle-building-orientated outdoor market stall.

nir- i had no success at the chemist, will try sports shop as im going their this afternoon to get a second gym kit (so i dont have to rush like a mad woman to get it in and out of the wash!), if not, next stop ebay!

peter- hey, i love your site  are you in the legal profession? so far im really leaning towards medical law actually, though im quite keen on IP too, will just have to see. i really want to do a masters after my degree before i go on to my legal practice course, my uni (sheffield Uni) does a really good one in biotechnological law so might be going into something like that. However, i change my mind lots so watch this space!

Day 6- Weigh Day!

Today i got weighed, i'm going to do it every sunday from now on. i know taking only one reading a week probably isnt ideal, but if i did it everyday i know i'd end up getting obsessed- so sundays it is!

anyway! I lost 6 1/2 lbs!! So i now weigh 274.5. I never thought losing weight could make me feel so good about myself! I know its only week 1 and next week the loss should slow down but im so happy! Anyway, long way to go yet...

corn flakes - 110

jacket potato with tuna and sweetcorn - 450

chicken dinner - 600

bowl of fruit - 200

hot chocolate ( my treat, but i got a low cal one!) - 50

exercise

10km row - 500

Hey Bev!

Congrats on losing those six pounds! I know how great you must feel!:shooting_star::rainbow: Keep it up!

Actually, weighing once a week, is pretty ideal. Weight fluctuates a lot according to how long ago you ate, how much water you've drunk, and all kinds of other things. Weighing every day is just confusing, because of all these factors. Once a week usually shows overall weight loss much more accurately.

Hope you're having a great day!

Day 10 -wow, how time flies! but its amazing in such a short period of time just how much healthier i feel. yeah, ive lost some weight and i can tell a bit, but the main difference is that this lifestyle is really helping me get the most out of life. In the days i feel awake and cheery and at night when it gets to 11pm im sleepy! I never used to be able to sleep at night properly before i started this. I would be up until 2 or 3am, just laid in bed thinking. now i genuinely feel shattered at night times which is great

porridge - 135

scrambled eggs on toast - 450

chicken, tomato and basil sauce, red peppers, onions, mushrooms, sweetcorn, pasta, sprinkle of cheese - 650

fruit -100

exercise

swimming - 100 lengths -500 cals

Day 11 - today was an absolute nightmare! We've been having massive rain storms in the UK, South Yorkshire particularly. Me being me thinks " a little rain isn't going to be that bad" and  i set off driving to Meadowhall (shopping mall about 25 miles away) to meet my friend. A journey that normally takes 30 minutes took 3 hours, motorway traffic was almost at a standstill and the main entrance to the mall was completely flooded. Then buses were cancelled so my friend (who cant drive yet) couldn't get home, so i had to drive into rotherham, one of the worst affected areas to take her home! Rotherham was a nightmare, 2 routes were completely flooded as both the river rother and river don had burst their banks! People were stranded in their office blocks with the water rising up around them and police and fire brigade were everywhere, it was absolutely mental! it took me 2 hours get my friend home, a journey which normallly takes 15 minutes. And after dropping her off i had to get back on the motorway and home to penistone. i must have been driving for 8 hours in total!! I ache all over!

corn flakes- 110

jacket potato with beans and cheese - 600

sweet and sour chicken - 1000 ( i dont even care how bad this is, i needed it after the day i'd had as i couldnt be bothered to cook at all!)

no exercise

So...how was the weigh-in?

I'm so glad you are getting to sleep better, and just having a better life in general. That's a great feeling isn't it?

I'm so jealous of your rain!!! Ok, so flooding and three hours of traffic isn't cool, but we are about to burst into flame here from lack of rain! As my dad noted, the grass is turning black, forget about brown.

Hope you're having a nice day, and that your hard work this week reaps results!!:wink:

Hey clarinetgurl, and anyone else whose reading! I feel like the biggest plonker in the world! Got weighed yesterday on the tanita scales at the gym, my boyfriend was with me and he pointed out the bleedin obvious, i had my socks on so my readings will be all innacurate! But the thing is, i've had my socks on for all my weigh ins, so whilst my total weight is a correct reading my body fat percentage is completely wrong!

I was amazed to hop on the scales without my socks and find that actually instead of being 49% bodyfat, which lets face it is bad enough, i'm actually 57.4%!!! i think ive got more fat on me than lard, lol . instead of having 136lbs of fat on me i actually have 157lbs of body fat!! my "big boned" theory/excuse was also thrown out of the water when i found out my fat free mass is 116lbs (just over 8 stone!). Anyway i must admit i feel kind of gutted! overall i did lose a pound, so i'm down to 273.5lbs now, which is cool... but i feel like i've taken one step forward and 2 steps back! now i've got even more fat to lose than i thought i did 2 weeks ago when i started! but hey! i need to think positive, i've lost my first half a stone in 13 days so i'm doing well enough!

Today is a big day as i start my new job tonight! I used to work at a call center and i munched on chocolate to pass the time. will definately not be getting into that  habbit again! working 5-9pm will definately be awkward with meal times but planned on having something light when i get in and having my lunch about 2pm so i dont get too hungry. got some lovely sugar free yoghurt for a snack too which looks yummy.

Day 13

cornflakes - 110

jacket potato with tuna, sweetcorn, extra light mayo, tomatoes, sprinkle of cheese - 600

pizza with peppers, mushrooms and chicken - 800

drinks - 100

exercise

for some reason i felt really drained today at the gym so didnt do that much!

elliptical - 17 mins - 175cals

exercise bike - 10 mins - 60 cals

rowing- 1500m - 75cals

well, first day of my new job went well, the people seemed really nice. its annoying that there isnt a canteen or somewhere i can get something healthy to eat, as im working out-of-hours there is only a chocolate and crisps vender! managed to resist temptation so far.

in all fairness im not even that tempted anymore by chocolate. i've managed 14 days without it and my life has only got better and better, im not going to jepordise that for chocolate or fatty crisps! im not saying i wont allow myself treats in the future. saying im never going to eat chocolate again is just not maintainable for a lifetime, and this is what this is about. no more yo-yo diets. no more weight loss only to put it all on again any more. no chance. i'm not going to be that person anymore. if this lifestyle has any hope of success in the long term i need to embrace it fully and completely unlearn all the bad habbits ive picked up over 21 years. but i can do it!

*positive thinking*

p.s peter, nir- you should do a calculator for calories burnt whilst typing out posts on here! sure my fingers are geting slimmer every day thanks to this place!

hello my lovelies, well its 2am and i cant sleep. you know what its like when you've got the world in your head and you cant seem to shut it out. so i thought id write in here and tell you guys how ive been getting on. at least something is going right at the moment - im sticking to my new healthy life. but sometimes does it  feel like you will never reach your goal? i know scientifically, so long as i burn more than i put in, i will get their. but realistically its going to take me at least a year to lose all this weight, 134lbs to go afterall! The thing is, ive never ever, so long as i can remember, been thin. not since i was like about 6 or 7  so i really dont know what on earth i will look like when i get down to my ideal weight. i always made excuses like i was "big boned" (yep, that old chestnut!) and i was "strong" :dizzy:, but when i went on the tanita scales at the gym my fat free mass is only 8 stone 4, not much to say i'm 5ft 9. so if im not big boned and i haven't got a particularly large frame, i have no idea what i will look like when im at my ideal weight - quite simply because i've never been their. once i get to 210lbs any weight i lose from their will be completely new territory. its quite exciting to think that ill be discovering a completely new me. and lets face it, i will look completely different when ive lost 141lb's in total, its like losing a whole person!

anyway, just some random ramblings there for you! here's how i did today..

Day 17

special k - 110

salad - 300

fresh fruit salad- kiwi, cranberrys, strawberrys, melon - 90 (yum yum! :yum:)

mullerlight toffee yoghurt - 100

2 cups of hot choc - 200 (dammit, why does work have to give us free hot choc's? im limiting it to once a week from now on!)

grilled chicken breast, mashed potato, peas, brocolli and onion gravy - 650 (my lovely boyfriend made it me for when i got in from work at 9.30pm)

banana - 100?

exercise

swimming - 100 lengths - 500 cals

Hi voodoodoll,

I was just reading your post about it taking a year to lose. A year goes by faster then you'd think and the slower you lose weight the more likely it's kept off.

It took my a year to lose 15 pounds but it stayed off and I usually go up and down. You look like your doing good with your food journal and excercise. Keep it up! you'll be down before you know. Good luck and thanks again for the post the other day.

Voodoo, I'm in the same boat! I've always been 'big', last time I was thin was when I was really little, and I don't even actually REMEMBER that, the only way I know is Mom found one of those old security tapes that you hand over to the police if your child goes missing (I swear I was like... 4 in that tape...maybe 5.)

Won't it be great to see what kind of body you'l have once your back into your ideal weight range?! :D Bet you'll feel a lot better for being healthy again, at least that won't change X3

Best of luck!

Hey voodoodoll! Thanks for posting in my diary!

I think Krissy's right...a year will pass by faster than you think. Especially since you are trying try a diet that you can't possibly keep up forever (cabbage, super low carb, etc etc) you are trying to make lifestyle changes! And it is going to be so worth it! You can TOTALLY do it!!:shooting_star:

Sorry you couldn't sleep. I have had two nights in a row now where I woke up about every twenty minutes. Not fun, nope nope nope.

Hmm, free hot chocolate. I would be hard pressed to resist that:coffee::grin:

Hope you have a nice day!!!

Great progress - Wow, 10.5 pounds in 3 weeks!?   I notice you are down below the 40 BMI also!   Welcome to the just "Obese" category - which is way better than the Mobidly Obese you and I both started in. :thumbsup:

I need to go take some (almost) before photos so I"ll have them to look back on once I've lost a bunch more weight.  If you haven't, you may want to do so too! :camera:

I think I definately have noticed myself slipping a lot more this week. I really need to rein myself back in with the cheese. Its my favourite food and I love it but its also calorific! Think ill try and go a couple of days without it and then bring it back in in moderation again.

Still havent been to work this week, the area where I work is the most flooded bit in the entire country so it might be a good few more days yet till im back earning money. Its really annoying though as I cant plan anything, you see i have to set off for work at 4pm and the agency dont generally let me know until about 3pm, so its not like i can plan anything else to do, i still have to be at home for 3pm, just like if I was working.

was thinking i'm going to try and set myself a short term goal to be working towards. 140lbs will take ages to lose, so if i break it down into more manageable chunks it might be a bit more inspiring for me. and also, when i reach my mini-goal i can give myself some kind of reward (non food related of course!) to spur me on.

So, my first mini goal can be 240lbs:

overall goal:

today was a ridiculously low calorie day, partly due to waking up at 12 noon and missing breakfast and also because when i went down to make tea the kitchen was absolutely mentally busy so i made something quick and easy!

i'm off work all week now so decided to make the most of the time ive got off and chill out a bit. its a shame i cant see my friends but they live in rotherham and the centre of sheffield which are the worst flood hit areas and no-one can get in or out without sitting in traffic for several hours (or a canoe ).

i feel bad for not having posted in so long. i was doing great with my new lifestyle change and then things slipped a bit. a bit of cold, some bad arguments with my fiancé and i didnt go to the gym in over a week!

but then on monday everything changed, i got my exam results- 2 firsts and a 2.1, i'm over the moon. in 2 exams i did the best in the whole year (thats 300 people!) so i am still running on adrenaline  results made me think, if i am so good academically and can be self disciplined enough to spend hour after hour sat reading law texts and case reports, why cant i channel some of that determination into my healthy eating. why cant i use my determination and ambition to help me shed the pounds? although i dont feel it mentally, i am obese, and obesity is an illness. surely getting myself to a healthy body weight is more important than a couple fo firsts, logically of course it is! in a years time i want to be the girl who has it all - a perfect body (well not perfect, ill always have a fat #%@&!, but it didnt do j-lo any harm did it?), a great degree, and a ticket to the glittering legal career I always dreamed of.  i can be that person, i just have to believe it in my heart and work harder than ive ever worked before to get their.

on monday things changed, i got myself into the right mental attitude and have hit the gym everyday so far this week. when ive not been at the gym ive been working, filling applications in for training contracts for 2009 (deadlines are soon) and getting on great again with my fiancé. i havent written down what ive eaten and havent worked out the calories for the last few days, but will start again today, was probably in the 1800 cal range for the last few days anyway, burning 400-500 cals at the gym.

as for my weight! i havent dared to get on the scales since my slip up! decided i will weigh myself on saturday, that will hopefully allow time for the water weight to go down! to be honest im scared of the scales at the moment. i guess i'll be gutted if i find out ive put on weight, but thats how the cookie crumbles, if i have its entirely my own fault- and those pesky curries!

see you all tomorrow i hope, will catch up with a few diaries now i think xxx

lets call this day 30 - may aswell start where i left off!

cereal- 170

beans on toast- 600

savory eggs- 180

pizza with veg- 800

cheese pitta bread- 300

exercise

30 minute walk round the lake- 200

today was a relatively high calorie day for me, also made me realise that i really need to cut back on my cheese intake, every meal i had included a bit of cheese! i know cheese is my vice, i love it so so much and could eat it for england. but now im going to try and have 2 cheeseless days to try and get some variety back into my diet.

i am the clumsiest person on the face of the earth- not a normal level of clumsiness, but crazily clumsy, some of the things i do rival laural and hardy stetches, though i guess i'd be most like hardy- wasn't he the fat one!! anyway, yesterday i was rushing to get ready to go out with my fiancé when he got in from work and felt thirsty, so ran downstairs to get some dilute pop, completely missed a step and went flying into the radiator at the bottom of the stairs.  anyway i was still their when Matt got back from work, unconcious on the floor, but he couldnt get in to help me as my fat #%@&! was wedging the door shut!! i finally came round a couple of minutes later to an aching headache that hasnt stopped since, also feeling so embarrassed for being such a goon. anyway, today my head is still aching so will be avoiding the gym today and shall go back tomorrrow. i know what you think, i should go to a doctor, but last time i did this i went to the hospital, spent 2 hours sitting around and then a guy tugged on my fingers for 2 seconds and shone a light in my eye and i could go home! all that waiting aroung just for that!!

ANYWAY, if head isnt right by tomorrow ill go to the docs! now ive got to rush and fill in some training contract applications - deadlines are really soon xx

so i guess i you could say i havent been doing great with my food choices, but calorie wise ive not being doing so bad. exercise has been apauling but i did enjoy that game of tennis on saturday and ive arranged to play next week too.

As today is a monday ill be making my way to the gym in about half an hour. monday feels like a new start, so i thought id set myself some goals for the week:

GOALS - please help me add to them if you can think of anything else to help

Drastically reduce amount of cheese in my diet-its full of calories and i must have it 5 out of 7 days in a week!! try and cut it down to a maximum of 3 days!

stop drinking my calories- work has a free hot drinks machine and god only knows how many calories are in those drinks. there is a water machine right at the side of them and a diet coke machine upsrairs so i have no excuse really for my utter laziness, expect perhaps for human nature!

cut back on curry and chinese- this will definately be the hardest one for me! but yesterday i agreed with my boyfriend that we would only have take away once a week. whilst this still isnt ideal it really is it my utter fave meal of them all so its just not feasable for me (yet) to cut it out completely! but on the plus side, it will save lots of money that i can spend on making lovely healthy meals!

get weighed- i havent been on the scale in about 2 1/2 weeks, simply because im scared of what it will say! this is silly, because even if i do weigh more than i did before its best to accept it and just work that bit harder. so i need to get weighed this week.

get up earlier in the mornings- the earlier im up means more time to work out, fill my applications in, see my friends and live my life. whats the point in laying in bed till 10.30 when i could be up at 8 and have been to the gym already! plus, being awake longer burns more calories in itself!

go to gym 5 times a week- ive been really slipping on my workouts lately, when i started this programme i went 6 times a week and last week i went twice and played a game of tennis. i really need to up my exercising. i hope this week i can go to the gym 5 times and have my game of tennis on saturday.

well, theres a few things to be working on!! its amazing how things can slip unless you take complete control of yourself all the time!

If you like your hot drinks :coffee:,  stick to unsweetened teas and coffees (water based, not milk based, though don't be afraid of a little bit of milk). If you like your drinks sweet, the machine probably won't have this option but you can bring artificial sweetners from home and add yourself. So your drinks are now just 5-10 calories each.
