Hi Hiker,

Yes it is so great to be "cruisin".  Actually this has been the first week that I have felt focused and hopeful that I can do something about my weight and general overall health.  I have made conscious decisions about everything that I put in my mouth.  I realize that it is just SOO easy to just pop that left over chocolate covered cherry or handfull of cashews left from Christmas in your mouth and not even give it a second thought that HEY this stuff all adds up in your daily calorie intake.

I tried another Wii game today for exercise.  The Jillian Michaels Ultimatum.  At my level she is way beyond what I can do.  Oh well I did what I could and watched the rest.  Those people she is training on Biggest Loser aren't in any better shape than I am and they are doing it, so why shouldn't I try to do it?

My 3 month old grandson is still in the hospital for rsv/pneumonia/102 temp/low oxygen levels and an ear infection.  To see him you would never know he is sick, he is still his smiley self.

Those people on the Biggest Loser are motivated by the chance to win money and they have a personal trainer. It's harder to quit when you have someone screaming in your face . This morning I got up to go to the gym and just did not feel up to it. Now if someone was offering me a million dollars or a really mean person was yelling "get out of bed and get to the gym NOW" I would probably do it and so would you . We do what we can and push a little harder but that's all we can do I think.

I hope your grandson is better soon, my granddaughter who is now a health 16 year old was hospitalized with the same thing when she was an infant. It is so hard when they are so little to see them sick.

Hi Hiker,

Thanks for your comments.  I actually have a much better reason to get healthier than a million dollars.  I am on a quest to save my life.  At close to 300 lbs. I have high blood pressure, bad knees and back and lack of motivation.  So far so good.  The scale wasn't kind this morning but I know for a fact that it is just a glitch because so far I have been staying well within my criteria to lose 1 1/2 to 2 pounds a week.

As for my grandson 3 1/2 months old he has been in the hospital since Thursday afternoon.  He has rsv, pneumonia, temp of 102, lower than normal oxygen levels, ear infection and now they have added pink eye.  He is just one little bundle of germs!  To interact with him though you would never know it bothered him, he is still his smiley charming self.  He is improving though so hopefully he will be coming home in the next couple of days.  Then grandma will get a workout because I don't think his parents will be able to take him back to daycare right away so I will probably be keeping him.

Well I am off to do some exercising and then some breakfast.

Wow Patchers you are doing well!  I find it very hard to even lose one pound.

I was amazed at how the contestants were able to lose so much weight in one week too on The Biggest Loser, but I am happy for them and also inspired by them.  When things get hard in my life I think I can do it, because I have to.  I use to tell myself that I couldn't do it, but I don't allow myself to think like that anymore.

I hope your grandson gets well soon.  Keep up the positive attitude and good work.  I know you can get healthy again.  Keep your fortitude!:sun:

Well so far so good.  I am sticking to it both with the controlled eating and adding some exercise to my daily routine.  Today was something called power yoga at the Y.  I have known for a long time that I have no balance so it was pretty laughable from my side of things.  The guy that was teaching it was totally serious though.  For some of the poses I had to use a chair to keep from toppling over.  Pretty funny in a sad kind of way.  Needless to say I don't think yoga will be my thing.  Since I'm not too keen on getting down on the floor for the numerous times he moved to the downward dog I just did them with my hands on the seat of the chair.

Eating is going well.  So far since starting back on New Years I'm down almost 6 pounds.  It is good to be refocused on my health.

Hi Patchers, slow and easy is the way I say. Balance is so important as we get older, I know I work on it too. My doctor gave me a great balance exercise and it's so easy and takes no extra time if you use an electric toothbrush that is timed for 2 minutes (I think they all are). Anyway to start she had me stand on one foot for a minute while I was brushing my teeth and then switch feet for the second minute. The nice thing is you are right in front of the counter to grab it if you need to and believe me at first I needed to a lot. Now I can stand on one leg for the full minute so I had to progress to doing a kind of stork pose to make it a little harder. Anyway that might help.

Does your Y have anything like a stretch and tone class? My gym has one and when I first started exercising I went to it all the time. It was no where near as much bending and getting on the ground as yoga. It was really all mild stretches and some very light weights. If they have something like that it might be more beneficial for you than the yoga at this point?

Thanks Hiker,

I liked the info on the teeth brushing.  I'll try that tonight!  I'm trying out all sorts of classes.  So far the exercises in the pool have been my favorities.

Well it is time for my month end report for January 2010.

Weight wise I started at 296 and ended at 285.6 so I had a double digit loss this month.  That should help the old BMI out a bit.

I was just reading the last year or so of my diary here and all the stuff I was going through with my dad and having to put him in "the home".  I guess I never posted that I lost my dad of a heart attack one year ago today.  He was only in the nursing home about 6 months and was able to live independently with our help in his own home until he was 89 1/2.  I feel I did everything I could for him while he was living.  I guess I am feeling a little melencholy because it is the anniversary of losing him today.

Anyway 2009 was a big year in my life.  It started out with losing my dad in January,  having a new grandson (Alex) in Sept. and my daughters wedding in Virginia in October.  I found out in November that I will probably be out of a job by Sept 1, 2010.  My new manager has decided to rewrite the requirements for my position so that after 37 years of doing my job, I will no longer be qualified to do my job unless I show proof that I am enrolled in college classes - specificallly Microbiology, physics, and calculus.  Now I am 58 years old so the thought of going back to college at this point is bleak to say the least.  I am by far not the onlly respiratory therapist effected by this.  There are 16 of us with 100's of years of experience that will be thrown to the curb on Sept. 1.  Needless to say morale in the workplace is at an all time low.

So now I am thinking early retirement and making getting healthy my new "job 1".  With a little over a 10 pound loss this month, I have a good start on it.

Hi Patchers!

Congrats on the weight loss this month!   Whooo Hooo!   I hope I can say that I've lost 10 lbs some month!

Next, I want to ask how your grandson is doing?   The news channels around here have done some stories on RSV lately.   I know that pneumonia is no fun, that's some serious stuff too!   I do hope he's been improving, and has gotten out of the hospital.   It's so scary when the little ones get sick! :crying:

Whew!   How unfair at your workplace!   Does experience count for nothing?   I was blessed, when I went back into the workforce.   I got a job as a bookkeeper, with nothing but high school accounting.........about 30 years earlier!   I've had to learn on the job.........and although I'm not perfect..........nobody knows the books on the companies in our small office like I do now.   My boss appreciates the experience I've accumulated in the last 15 years!   Of course, I work for a wonderful lady, who is retiring this year, after 45 years with the company.   I have been blessed to have a female boss..........besides understanding family commitments, she has been very generous with lunches out, jewelry, gift certificates for shopping or mani/pedicures......over the years, she's completed a beautiful set of Christmas dishes for me, which I intended to pass on to my daughters, after many years of memories using them.

May February be a great month for both of us!  :ribbon: :ribbon:

Hi Hisgal,

Grandson is fine after 10 days in the hospital with RSV and pneumonia.  He is a cutey.

On the job front, I was blessed with having the most wonderful female boss for over 25 years.  She add the nerve to retire darn her.  We all told her we wanted to leave first.  Things have sure gone down hill since she left.

One thing I determined is that I was NOT going to deal with the job situation by overeating.  In fact I am focusing my frustration on my workouts.

On to February!

btw I see I am now the biggest loser in the New Years challenge.  woohoo.

Well it has been a week of decisions for me.  I have had a tremendous amount of job stress due to a new manager that is an absolute !@#$%^&*.  I have had the same job/career at the same place for almost 37 years and it has been great except for the last couple of years.  I have been blessed for most of those 37 years with wonderful coworkers and bosses but lately I have felt so much job stress that I just dreaded going to work.  I know I have at least 50 pounds of fat on my body from job stress eating.

After discussing this issue with my family many times over the last couple of years and with the support of my wonderful hubby I turned in my resignation on Friday effective immediately.  So after 37 years my career ended with surrendering my badge and cleaning out my locker (under supervision) no less.  Quite the retirement party eh?

I can tell you that I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders.  It is really sad that it came to this but it was really becoming a mental health issue for me.  I was so angry all the time at the way things are at work, it wasn't good for me or anybody else.  So now I am starting the next phase of my life.

Retirement!

Hey Patchers, congratulations on your retirement. I hope to be joining your ranks in a few years.

It is so wrong the way companies treat people, loyalty means nothing to them. That is why so many of the young kids have no intention of staying with a company, they go where ever they get the best offer and they don't mind changing jobs. I can't say that they are wrong. My own experience was I worked for a company for 25 years and they just decided one day to close the office in our state. They didn't even have the courtesy to tell us, we actually read it on a web site :dizzy:. I got out w/ a pension but many were not so lucky. One woman who worked for them for 30 years, had actually moved across the country for them--twice, got no retirement because she wasn't old enough. Anyway just wanted to let you know there are a lot of people who get treated badly after many years of hard work. Not right.

I am glad you made the right decision for you, you should not have to be under stress every day. It sounds like you made this decision after a great deal of thought and soul searching so I am sure it is the right  one.  I have a feeling you will be better off mentally and probably physically too. Now you can concentrate on yourself and your family. Take some time to just breath and assess, don't worry too much about getting on the diet and exercise track. Just take it easy and it will all fall into place.

Well I thought I would post a message for a change.  It is a birthday tradtion.  I was looking at my blog here and it looks like on my birthday 3 years ago I weighed 285.  Today I weigh 269 so that is a good thing.  Of course I wish it was 169 but I am working on it.

The last post was about my retiring from work under stressful conditions.  I would like to report that it was absolutely the right decision.  I feel so good about life now.  I always laughed when people would say how busy they are in retirement.  Well it is so true.  As a respiratory therapist at a hospital I worked every other weekend and at least half the holidays so now when someone says there is a wedding or a trip I can say gee I think I can come, it is my weekend off.  It is so weird for 37 years I planned everything around my weekends off.  Now I have them all off.  It is wonderful.

Yay, Patchers!   I'm glad you are enjoying it!    And...........I wish I was at 169 too, but it will come..........it's just a slower pace than I usually try to take, but hopefully it will be more permanent this time.

And Happy Birthday!   :birthday_cake:  :christmas_gift:

I just thought I would stop by and say hi to all my friends here on cph and see how everyone is doing.  I have been enjoying my retirement very much and can now say like all the other old retired folks that I don't know how I ever fit in a job because it seems like I am busier than ever.

Weight/fitness though has been a disaster.  I have managed to eat my way back to 300 pounds and am trying to get some focus on doing something about that.  I'm hoping you guys will HELP ME!

It seems fitting that I should refocus since we are starting a new year soon. (I say that every year though)
