It does not state pork sausage, it just says sausage.  It's like the fish.  They only list a few fish types on the diet generator, but the authors have said that ANY fish is acceptable.  So I eat salmon once or twice a week. I think turkey bacon is probably ok, too as it is the same kind of change I made with the sausage.  I think the best swaps are the same type (lean for lean, etc.) but I think if we are going to swap, it's better to swap a leaner meat for a fatter one on the menu, than it is to swap a fatter meat for a lean one on the menu.  I am seriously not sure about soy milk.  I think it is a little less calores and maybe fat and cholestorol, too.  I wish I could answer that, but I just don't know.  I don't drink milk but I love almond milk. I am sure that almond milk is probably a :nono:no-no.  Maybe someone else can comment.

Let's move the discussion to the general discussion board where more people read the posts, ok?  I will try to copy this over...

sure, thank you for your input. i have to do more groceries today lol.

Hi...as far as SOY MILK...it can cause some people to gain weight as soy can mess with your hormones.  You have to see what it does to you personally.  Many men have to stop drinking soy milk as it makes them develop extra breast tissue. That tells you how soy can be pretty powerful hormonally!  Almond milk that is not sweetened is probably a better choice if you can not drink regular milk.
If you choose milk......organic is best...as it is once again a hormone factor. (cows are given hormones to increase production)  Dairy :cow:is great for weight loss...so if you can choose milk, cheese or yogurt...go for it.
If you like coffee/chai lattes or cappuccino...choose milk on your menu, warm and froth it :coffee::thumbsup:
Hope this helps.

I apologize if this question has been answered already, but I don't have time or patience to read the entire thread before I start yapping away! :dizzy:

A little bit o' background:

I am a caregiver for a disabled man who lives with me in my home. When I first began caring for Josh, he was twig skinny. He looked seriously unhealthy due to the lack of any meat on his 6'1 frame. About three years ago, he suffered a traumatic experience and was placed on psych meds which I believe caused him rapid weight gain. That combined perhaps with him hitting his mid-thirties and his metabolism slowing down? Whatever the issue may be, Josh has suddenly sky-rocketed to 280 lbs!

With his generally poor physical health (lung disease/half of one lung removed, low immunity, chronic muscle pain, etc.) being grossly overweight is just another risk factor for Josh. I have started him on the FL4I diet because of the amazing success I had with it when I wanted to be skinny for my European vacation in 2008. (I've since gained back the weight so we are doing the diet together.)

Finally, my question ...

We are on Day #4, and we are both disgruntled. The generated diet calls for us to eat a meal of bacon and eggs + a meal of shrimp and boiled eggs EVERY SINGLE DAY! Often, one of these meals appears twice a day. Granted, we only selected 7 items from each side (because Josh does not like fish or nuts), but still the diet is SO repetitious! I like the idea of oatmeal, Banana shakes, and frozen yogurt, but these items only appear on our menu 3-4 times in the entire 11 days. Usually, it's bacon, eggs, shrimp, more bacon, eggs, shrimp until the thought of eating at all makes me want to vomit.

Josh does not believe that he can lose any weight by eating a plate of bacon every day.

I do not believe that Josh's disability check can cover the cost of him eating bacon + shrimp every day.

Has anybody had experience with a similar type of menu, and did you have success losing weight while on it?

Thanks so much!

Caregiver33

PS: I am seriously considering switch us to the "Beyond Calories" diet, where we will have a greater variety of food options ... but that will mean giving up the oatmeal, banana shakes, and frozen yogurt that I crave.

My second question:

For chicken, bacon, meat slices, etc. I quite often substitute veggie meat products. I did this two years ago when I tried FL4I, and I was still successful.

Does anybody know of a reason why this would be "wrong"?

Thanks!

Hi Caregiver.....  When you use the diet generator and get your menu plan you can click back and generate another menu plan as many times as you wish until you find a plan more to your taste.  Adding as many items as you can (up to 15) from the list on the diet generator helps create a more varied plan.
If you don't want so many eggs on the menu then only select it once from the list. Do you know you can substitute the deli meats for each other... ie, if you have ham on the menu you can sub with chicken or beef etc. You can also substitute the fish on the menu with ANY other fish... my husband likes to sub fish for salmon occasionally.
Also, when you have eggs on the menu you can cook them any way you like, ie, you don't have to boil or scramble them. You can make a tasty omelette if you also have a deli meat option at the same time.. or add a small amount of onion, tomato and peppers (allowed on ANY meal as this is what salsa sauce is made of and is allowed on any meal) to make a spanish omelette.  If you have deli meat such as chicken or beef you can make various chicken dishes or have a small beef steak for a change.. some even use very lean minced beef or turkey to make a tasty dish with the peppers, onions, tomatoes and whatever other option is available on your menu. Check out the recipe section for lots of great ideas. You have to be a little creative with the menu ingredients to keep it interesting.
I love bacon but to speed weight loss I always cut off all visible fat before grilling... and I do remember eating quite a lot of it too! But, I lost 40lbs in 3 months by eating this way so I know it DOES work if you stick to it. Make sure you drink all the water stated as this really does make a big difference to your loss. Another really important aspect to this diet is that you MUST ONLY eat until satisfied. If you eat until full your weight loss will be affected.

As for substituting chicken, bacon, meat slices for veggie meat slices, I haven't personally tried this as I love my meat.  But, as long as it's protein, I don't see why not.  It would be a case of trial and error... try it and see how you get on.

Thanks for the tips, Lorraine!

I did try generating multiple diets, but it seems like on each one the computer will pick two types of food (example: shrimp/eggs or grapes/yogurt) and repeat that same combo again and again over the 11 days with little to no variation.

When using FL4I in the past, I HAVE used the substitution method:

Boiled eggs = any style of eggs
Cashews = any type of nut
Etc.

The trouble with the DG when it comes to my friend is that he doesn't want to eat fish (except shrimp) or nuts at all. various types of nuts and fish comprise a large number of our 15 choices, so we wind up only able to choose from what's left. This makes the diets very repetitive!

Therefore, we have switched over to "Beyond Calories" where we have more control over our food selections + it is easy for me to prepare something different for myself (because I DO like nuts and fish!).

It's still kinda repetitious, though, so I definitely need to take a look at the recipe section of the forum for new ideas. Can we really have small steaks in place of roast beef? Awesome!

Thanks!

I've tried to do some searching about this before I came here to ask.

Fruit day (which I'm suffering through the last part of the day) says it consists of:
• Oranges
• Pears
• Apples
• Grapes
• Peaches
• Plums
• Strawberries
• Kiwis
• Grapefruit

I thought I read somewhere that I can have tomato soup.

Is this so?

I found the apples/splenda/cin in the microwave recipe here, and that helped.

So...tomato soup on fruit day...yes? No?

Thanks!

Yes Rickie... tomato soup is allowed because as the condiment salsa sauce is allowed on ANY meal and it is made of mostly tomatoes, onions and peppers, we deduce that those ingredients are ok to add to any meal. Also, technically, tomato is a fruit anyway.

Here's the quick tomato soup recipe....

Extra Quick Low Calorie Tomato Soup (Allowed on fruit day)

Ingredients

      2 Medium Onions
      1 teaspoon dried Garlic
      Pinch dried mixed herbs
      4 Cans of Chopped Tomatoes
1 Pint of Stock (2 chicken oxo cubes)
      Low Calorie Fat Spray/Olive Oil

Directions
1) Dice and fry onions until golden brown.
2) Pour in 4 cans of chopped tomatoes, bring to boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.
3) Pour in 1 pint of stock, garlic and herbs bring to boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.
4) Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5) Optional: Blend for a smooth texture.

This recipe can be frozen.

Ok thank you soooooo much.

This morning started off great with the 3.4 loss...then the sandwich...yep I was good to go.

Then, the second meal (4 hours later) (Fruits only). I did good and enjoyed some strawberries and some purple, red and green grapes. I wasn't stuff but I was totally satisified...then 2 hours goes by and I have a massive headache and feel like I'm starvin' to death.

Well less than 3 hours later I had to eat. I ate a plum and then cut up some apples with the splenda and cinnammon(sp)...that was enjoyable.

Now it's 2 hours later and I want to eat again. I've drank over 80 fl oz of water already today.

I sent my hubby out for some "Emergency Tomato Soup".

I did just walk over a mile in 30 mins on the treadmill, so I'm tryin', but today has been a tough one. Thanks to this forum I don't feel alone...it seems to be the least favorite and hardest day to get through.

Thanks again for the support and response!

Next time I'm savin' sammy for 2nd or 3rd meal

Most of us have the sandwich for dinner (3rd) meal. It is easiest to have mixed fruit salad for breakfast and lunch... I usually cut a selection of mixed fruit into chunks and mix together in a bowl with a 1/4 pint serving of made up sugar free jelly (Hartley's sugar free jelly is only 8cals per serving and is allowable as it comes under the 10cals per drink rule) .. it seems more satisfying to me that way, more like a meal rather than just grabbing a piece or two of fruit.  Then for dinner pack the sandwich full of the deli meat and salad and that will not only be the best sandwich ever but it will satisfy you until your last meal of fruit. Fruit day will get better once you get used to it... I actually learned to enjoy it and I hated fruit before I started this diet!  In fact, I still do have the odd fruit day even after maintaining for 2 months as I really do enjoy it and I always feel great the next day!

Hi Guys -  I just decided to try FL4I...I don't have the money to download and buy the actual program, but I've done some reseach on it and get the gist of it. I do have a question. Are you allowed to have soup? I love soup - especially vegetable beef! I also really like to make home-made chicken noodle soup. As I don't have the actual program, I don't really know all the food I'm allowed to have.

Any information about this would be so helpful! I'm on day 2 - fruit day and I'm actually enjoying all the fruit I'm eating! I am going to D-I-E on veggie day though!

Thanks,
~Betsy

PS - sorry if this has already been answered before....I didn't  read through all 21 pages of comments!

Hi Betsy...  The question you asked is a little more complicated to answer than you think as you don't have the diet plan.  You can only eat the foods stated on the plan at each of the 4 meals a day.  So, for instance, if one meal stipulates chicken then you can only eat chicken. There is also a limited choice of condiments that we can use but apart from herbs and spices, nothing else should be added. So, in short, to answer your question, NO, store bought soups would NOT be allowed as they have ingredients that would not be listed on the generated menu. However, home made soups using only the ingredients stated on the plan per meal WOULD be allowed.

When you purchase the Fat loss 4 idiots diet it contains a handbook and menu generating software called the diet generator. This software creates a personal menu for each user based on the food items that he or she chooses from a list. The software splits the food items that you have chosen into 4 meals per day using the calorie shifting method guidelines on which Fat Loss 4 Idiots is based and then creates an 11 day menu. This menu must be followed to the letter along with the rules and guidelines printed in the handbook.  So, unfortunately, it is not possible to follow the FL4I diet from researching the internet only.. you do need to purchase the plan.

Lorriane - thanks for answering my question. Sad to know I can't do many soups - maybe I will come up with a new creation!

I would like to purchase the actual diet plan, but I'm a poor college student with $17 to my name sooooooooooooo I can't!  Maybe in the future I will be able to get it. I have been able to find several....copies (so to speak) of the allowed list of food as well as the rules in the handbook and also about 5 different examples of meal plans....so I think I will stick with what I got with maybe a few moderations. I've done it for 2 days and have lost 2lbs.

Thanks again,
~Betsy

hi to all,

I am a 5.2 feet tall girl and started at 136 lbs and lost almost 7 pounds on my first cycle. Right now I am on my sixth day of my second cycle and I have gained 2 pound since the end of my first cycle. I never weight myself after my three cheat days, however in my second cycle I have been strict and have followed all the rules. what do you guys think is making me gain weight or do you thing that those 2 lbs come from the cheat days.

Firstly Kam welcome to the forum and a huge congrats on the 7lbs lost on your first cycle! That is just awesome.. especially as you don't have a lot of weight to lose!

Your gain on your 2nd cycle could be down to a lot of things... to name just a few.. time of the month, medication, water retention, not drinking enough water, portion size and YES, it could have been a substantial gain on your choice (cheat) days and you are still in the process of losing that... I know of others gaining 4 to 6lb back by over doing choice days!
I know the plan says that you can eat whatever you want on those days but it really does not work that way because if you stuff yourself silly you can gain a lot back plus retain water.  Instead, for choice (cheat days) it is best to 'practise maintenance' by making healthy choices such as lean proteins with lots of fruit and vegetables and allowing just one or two small treats in moderation per day. You must also continue with the principles of the plan.. ie.. drink all the water (at least 8 x 8oz glasses a day), eat 4 times a day at least 2.5 hours apart and only until satisfied, never till full and don't eat between meals.  That way you can get through choice days with no or very little gain and you won't have to spend the first week of your next cycle trying to lose what you have gained on your days off.  In any case, you need to practise maintenance on your choice days in order to learn how to maintain or else when you do reach goal weight and go back to your old eating habits you will just pile the weight back on again.
Always weigh yourself on the morning of the first day of your cycle so that you know your starting weight (and how well you got through the choice days) and again after the last day. This will help you to learn to control you're eating on your days off plan.

Most of us hang out on the general discussion thread and would love to see you there.  Pop in if you have any other questions or concerns or just to pick up some great tips and support.  We're a friendly bunch and always happy to meet new members.  Good luck and keep us posted

Lorriane_UK,
thank you for the information and advice... Today is my last day of my second cycle and tomorrow I will weight myself. After these three cheat days I will start my third cycle but I have some doubts that I hope you can help me with. Can I use Slpenda? Can I use other condiments like cajun, garlic, coriander, etc? Can I use a little butter to cook my meals? Can I always use onion and tomatoes to prepare my meals?

Thank you again for your help,
Kam

Kam... Yes, you can use splenda and all herbs and spices are allowed too. Stick to the condiments as listed on the plan and fat free very low calorie salad dressings but use them very sparingly. Plain is always best if you can.
Butter is not allowed. Use pam spray or other very low cal cooking spray or a tiny amount of olive oil instead (I find a teaspoon of olive oil goes a long way if you add a tablespoon of water).
Yes, you can have tomatoes (including canned), onions and peppers with ANY meal... including fruit day so check out the recipe thread as there is a great quick tomato soup you can make to help get through fruit day.
You can substitute any meat for another.. such as beef, chicken, ham.. and yes, steak would be ok but make sure it is lean.. trim off any visible fat before cooking.
Please read the diet tips and guidelines thread as there is a list there of subs allowed and other helpful tips and ideas to get you through.

How is the plan working for you now.. have you lost any more?

Lorriane_UK,
thank you for the information, I was using a little bit of butter with most of my meals so from now on I will follow your advice. In this second cycle I lost 3 pounds and I am now 7 pounds away from my target.

Gratefully,
Kam
