| I was told that if I burn atleast an extra 500 calories more than I eat a day, I lose 1 pound a week. I was wondering if this were true. I am hoping to lose atleast 40 pounds by June. I have gained 40 pds since having my baby last year and I am a bridesmaid in two weddings in June and want to look good.

Yes - see What It Takes To Loose a Pound.
There are 12 weeks until the beginning of June and 40/12=3.3lb per week. Theoretically you will need a rather large deficit to achieve that, much more than 500. This is a good time to mention What It Takes To Loose It All. 1-2lb per week is more realistic, unless you are very obese (in which case faster loss might be possible)
