If you would like, I can show you what my hips look like now.

Can you do it while wearing a bow tie and Chippandale assless chaps?

I'm just sayin' you should get use to it now, 'cuz you know that's what you're gonna wear when you reach goal!

OK, I'll be a big brave dog and post full torso pics...

Here's one from a bit of a distance:

Here's one close up:

Actually, considering how big my stomach was before, along with how quickly I lost the weight, this could be a heck of a lot worse than it is.

As I said, I have time in my favor, and I'm sure this will improve a bit with time. Strength training might help it a bit, too. Only time will tell.

Interestingly, enough, I think I look a bit smaller in these pictures than the ones I took a day or two ago, but maybe it's just my imagination. Or...maybe I was bloated from rice and beans.

Down to 218. Onward ho!

So you've lost all this weight without any strength training?

I used to be a "cardio queen" til I discovered weights about 3 or 4 years ago. After that there is no going back.

I love my weights!!

Yep, no strength training thus far.

To tell you the truth, while I've done a good deal of research on the subject, it's still a bit daunting to me. I have found diet and cardio to be much less conflicting, but that's just me.

My boss's son is a bodybuilder - he can bench press over 700 pounds, and he's had the help of a personal trainer to do it. He's coming over tomorrow so I can take a look at his computer - maybe I'll ask him to show me the ropes for a session or two...or three.

He did say that he used to be really overweight, too, and found it much easier to put muscle on as a result, since his body had adapted to that in the past. We shall see if the same holds true for me. I do know that I started to get muscle bulges in my legs after only about one week of treadmill once I first started. It was actually a bit freaky, because I wasn't used to seeing them.

I put off strength training for a long time.....because it seemed quite overwhelming for me. Finally I just started reading Oxygen magazine, Fitness RX, really whatever kind of fitness magazine I could get my hands on. I am a research fanatic as well. If that guy could show you the ropes for a few sessions that would be AWESOME.

I didn't lift very heavy at first and worked my way up. I got a free session with a personal trainer and she told me I should lift heavier. After that I dropped almost 4 % bodyfat in almost 2 months JUST from the weight training. I care more about bodyfat % than I do the scale weight. I can't wait for my gym to get calipers. It kinda ticks me off that they still don't have them...if you are a fitness center/gym/whatever that is a necessity not a luxury. You should definitely get your bodyfat % tested. I think you will excel at weight training. I can't wait to see your progress. Men are amazing when it comes to lifting weights. I got my fiance to lift more...he is in the army so it IS required that he is fit but they just want you to be able to run X amount of miles in X amount of minutes. I was like "you should lift too though, it will make your time better". Just since he's been out in Iraq he's been lifting weight and he looks awesome! You guys put on muscle so easily and can look ripped in a matter of MONTHS!

Maybe you should check out this website

http://www.bodybuilding.com

They have really encouraging weight loss stories and MUSCLE mass stories on there as well. It also has pictures of the different exercises, what bodypart they work, and how many reps/sets to do.

Let me know if it has been any help. OR maybe you've already heard of it.

Thanks for the link, Carly! Thanks to you, too, gkr747.

The staple of my exercise regimen has been the bike and the treadmill, along with regular walking. For a long time, my regimen consisted of 30 minutes bike, 60 minutes treadmill, for 6 days a week, working up to about 66 cycled miles a week and about 27 miles a week on the treadmill. For a month or so, I added in about 6-7 miles of neighborhood walking a week.

Over time, I worked on increasing intensity, and that is important to help prevent your body from adjusting.

In the process of losing so much fat, I have lost a lot of muscle, and have started strength training to help replenish it. I also have been mixing up my cardio routine, adding in elliptical, along with doing different things on the treadmill, including running and using the incline more. Once I figure out how to use the Stair Stepper properly, I'll probably do that, too. I get the concept, but it's a bit awkward for me. I can't figure out how far you are supposed to let your legs go back up. I probably need to research that.

My calorie intake from the time I was just over 300 until I hit 219 was pretty much as follows:

About 3 days a week: 1700-1800 calories
1-2 days a week: 1500-1600 calories
1-2 days a week: 1200-1330 calories
1 day a week: 2500-3000 calories

This really was not enough. I should have increased it a bit early on along with adding strength training. Even 2000 would have been better, and I likely still would have seen good results.

Now, my calorie intake is close the following:

3 days a week: 2500-2600 calories
3 days a week: 2700-2800 calories
1 day a week: Varies, but has been at least 2000

With me trying to gain muscle, I believe this is sufficient for now. I have about 150 pounds of lean body weight, and I get at least 150 grams of protein in my standard diet, so I should be good.

I'm down to 216 with about 23% body fat, and still counting.

Last month was a "break month" of sorts for me, but I'm back at it. I'm down to 211. Short-term goal is 199, and then I'll see where I am from there.

Hey Nick, If it's the hips you want to work on. Then let me tell you, Jogging is the way to go. Man oh Man, it will work those hips, trust me.

Since I have done the elliptical two days in a row and some jogging. I can feel it, mostly in the hips.

Anyway, just thought I would share, what I found out in my adventures with jogging.

lol, I can't believe I missed this. Geez, I should come in here more often.

You know Nick! They are not exaggerating. Not to get personal or anything. But, I wear thongs now. No way, in h.e.l.l. would I of done that at my starting weight.

So, quit rolling your eyes, it is possible...

Oh yea, I want to be the first one that gets to see that pic, when it happens....lol

Eh, it's the loose skin that really makes me leery about that. I really really hate that I let myself go for so long, but as I get down more and more, I just get more and more of it. I've already come to terms with the fact that it will never stretch back fully, and without that, I doubt you'll ever see me in a thong.

Not to mention I'm simply too innocent to wear such a thing...

Well, while I'm here, I might as well update my progress. My body fat is up to 25.2%, which is obese, and that was as 215. Weight is back down to 209. Short-term goal is 199, long-term goal is 170 at the moment. Maybe less...we will see.

Yea, I know that dang loose skin can be problem. Fortunately I don't have any on my butt. Mine is the lower stomach and arms. My arms are hardly noticeable. But, the stomach is gross.

Hello Nick! I'm a new member here and I just can not "not" say something after seeing your before and after pics! You did such an awesome job! Congrats! It proves that if there is willingness there is still hope. I have a few questions I wanna ask you tho...How did you get started on the healthy living? Did you ever feel like it was too late to start or it wasn't working when you don't see fast results?

I'm currently at 145 and with the short height of 5'0, I'm very out of shape but everytime I start eating healthy and working out, I tend to overdo everything and end up gaining more weight. :(

Congrats again! You are such an inspiration!

I am sure Nick will have some great advise for you when he comes on here.

But, I couldn't help but offer some of my own.

I would just start out slow, change one thing at a time in your diet and go from there. When I started out, I did things like drinking so many classes of water a day. Also, cut back on my soda intake. I didn't even add exercise until I had lost most of the weight. What a difference that made when I did. I just started out walking.

I think everyone tends to go over board at times. I do that with the food part. I always think that since I am eating healthy food that I can consume more of it. Well, that doesn't work if you chow down a whole can of mixed nuts. lol, so everything in moderation.

Good Luck to you and like I said I am sure Nick will have some great stuff to add.

Hello cportwine! Thank you so much for your opinion. I think I will need to take it slowly too. Sometimes I used to do the same thing that you've said, eat way too much of the healthy food, but sometimes I just cut everything out of my diet and eat so little that I end up craving for everything again!!!!:yum:  Thanks so much again. It's great to meet people who also know how hard it is to be overweight.

It is AMAZING the mental boost that comes form seeing your weight without a 2 in front of it!

I really think the whole key to it...is just think of it as getting healthy and not as a diet. Take it one step at a time. I won't lie and say it is easy cause it's not. I still struggle from day to day with temptations and eating things I know I shouldn't.

But, If you just take it one step at a time it makes it so much easier. It takes the pressure off. I lost all of my weight in a three year span. I am still trying to lose a little. But, am happy with where I am at. I went from 174 to 125 average. So, it can be done.

I pretty much did what I said. I would start one thing and when that got easy, I would start another thing. Now after all that, I play around with it. One week will be allot of exercise, the next week will be focusing on my fiber intake, the next will be trying to eat allot of veggies, etc.  I just keep at it... day after day.. If I get bored with one aspect of dieting, then I try another part of it.

The key is to never give up...

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Danewchange, I got started because I was planning a weeklong trip to Gatlinburg, TN to entertain a friend. If you've ever been there, you know that you CAN drive, but it is definitely not preferred. Most people walk everywhere.

I wanted to have some energy for the trip...to be able to walk around without tiring too quickly. So, I started exercising. Weight loss wasn't really a big goal at that point - I just wanted the energy boost from regular exercise. Then, it just continued from there.

I have had my ups and downs. It is a HARD journey, and I have experienced setbacks. I'm currently in the middle of one - I'm back up to the 230's. The hardest part for me is finding a different outlet for my emotions other than food. Further, at the end of each meal, I look forward to the next one, and it's a vicious cycle.

To be successful at weight loss, you have to want it so much that you can TASTE it. You have to find the motivation to stick with it, whether it be for your health, your family, so you can buy that set of lace panties from Victoria Secret (NOT MY GOAL...!!!), or WHATEVER.

Even though I'm still young, I have regretted not starting sooner, and letting myself go so far for so long. The loose skin, especially, is really frustrating at times, and I find myself wondering sometimes if it really is an improvement.

But...it is an improvement. While my mood is more varied than it used to be, I am more happier overall, and definitely more confident.

Also, as Cindy said, one thing at a time. It's so easy to want everything to be optimal, but it will not always be optimal, and it doesn't have to be, nor should it be. There is a very delicate balance to be found, that varies by individual. Treat yourself from time to time, but keep things in perspective. Over time, you will discover that you can still be a little "naughty" on occasion and lose weight.

Victor, I want that "mental boost" so bad that I can DEFINITELY almost taste it. It tastes like pecan cheesecake. I want it...NOW.

New year...new us. Find your motivation and stick with it...for YOURSELF, because you deserve it. (Speaks to self, too.)

Hi Cindy and Nick and everyonene!, Thank you so much for your comments!! I'm starting to change my look on the situation. Now I still eat mostly everything (exept junks like chocolate and candy tho, but other Asian food given that I'm Asian ) but I eat them in very small portions according to the 1 serving at a time. I used to eat so much that I was eating mostly 2 to 3 servings in each group of food at a time:shock: And I'm trying not to touch anything after 6 PM, so far so  good. I feel really better when going to sleep because Im not bloated anymore lol.

As for Nick, please don't doubt yourself! That must be the worst thing you can do bc it makes it so much more harder when you dont believe in yourself anymore

You DID a trememdous job

and everyone can see that. Of course there will be some minor setbacks on the side but I think with time, it will get better. I don't know if you are doing weight training? I personally think weight training + cardio really tone the body. Before when I was slimmer, I used to do lots of weight training+ cardio classes but as things happened and I stopped going, the fat just came out of nowhere!! And now I am here to do this the healthy way.

Remember, You are awesome Nick! Not everyone can do what you did! Being very determined and brave

maybe you think im saying it too much, but thats how i really feel

Thank you for the encouragement! It does help, and I truly appreciate it.

I am doing a little bit of strength training, off and on. At this stage of my journey, my body fat is over 25%, and I really want to focus on that. My main goal with strength training now is to minimize any further muscle loss as much as possible. I'm sure I'll incorporate it in more as I get closer to my goal.

Believing in ourselves does indeed go a very long way. I'm still working on that one.
